Post Op Instructions for Laser Skin Resurfacing

Day of the Procedure:

  • If the dressing applied in the office comes loose, reposition the dressing and apply a cold compress to the treated area. The dressing should be kept in place for three days. Use Vaseline to cover any exposed areas of the treated skin, such as around the eyes, nose and mouth.
  • Begin applying ice packs to the treated area. This will help keep the area cool and alleviate discomfort as well as help keep down swelling you may experience. Frozen peas work well as ice packs. (Swelling will be most evident around the eye area).
  • You may begin taking pain medication to help alleviate discomfort
  • Try to relax this day and keep your head elevated with two pillows behind the back to help reduce the swelling.

Days 2-10:

  • Apply Vaseline to the exposed treated areas 6-10 times daily to keep the areas moist.
  • Continue to take pain medication as needed and apply ice packs to help alleviate discomfort and swelling. The discomfort usually subsides after 48 hours.
  • A crust may form over the exposed areas. This should not be picked or scratched at but allowed to heal naturally. (Picking can cause scarring).
  • Once the dressing is removed, you may begin taking showers. Cleanse the treated area with gauze packs as instructed and reapply Vaseline. Moisture frequently to help skin from drying.

Days 10-6 Weeks:

  • You may begin applying make-up once the crusting has disappeared. This usually occurs at 8-10 days following the treatment. A good moisturizer should be used as the treated area will be very dry and tight at first. Use Eucerin, Cetaphil, Aveeno or a similar moisturizing lotion.
  • Avoid getting any sun on the treated area for two weeks. The treated area will be very susceptible of sun exposure and damage can occur. At two weeks, you may go out with a sun block of 30 SPF or greater. This must be used for approximately four months following the laser treatment.
  • Once the crusting has subsided, the treated area will be pink or reddened. This will gradually subside over a period of 3-6 weeks.
