Temporomandibular Joint Disorder – (TMJ or TMD)

What is Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMJ)

Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ) may encompass conditions that effect the joint, jaw muscles and nerves on one or both sides of the head. Pain may be experienced in one or more of these areas – jaw, face, head or neck.

  • Myofacial Pain: A common, painful condition that involves the muscles that control jaw movement.
  • Internal Derangement: Dislocated disc in the jaw joint, or dislocated jaw, or an injury to the “hinge” (condyle).
  • Arthritis

How can BOTOX Injections Help TMJ?

Scientific studies show that BOTOX injections offer significant improvements in pain, function, ability to open mouth, and in chewing comfortably. Dr Stosich possesses expert knowledge of facial nerves and muscles. He is able to inject BOTOX into the jaw muscles which will block the nerve signals that cause uncontrollable muscle movements, thus relaxing the muscles.

BOTOX injections take only 10-15 minutes and remain effective for a time period of two to six months. To sustain relief, the injections must be repeated every few months. The relief of your symptoms will depend on your own TMJ condition.

Do I Need Surgery?

Only a small percentage of TMJ cases require surgery. Typically surgery is considered after other conservative measures have been examined. Utah Oral & Facial Surgeons may refer a patient to an excellent, reputable physical therapist.

Utah Oral & Facial Surgeons will perform a thorough exam of the jaw and joints which is critical to determine the specific treatment. Every patient is different, and treatment is unique to the individual’s contributing factors.

What Does the Surgery Encompass?

Surgery is performed under general anesthesia. This surgery will take place in Utah Oral and Facial Surgeries state of the art operating suite or in one of the treatment rooms or at the hospital. The surgery may include any of the following: surgical cleaning of the joint area, removing any tissue adhesions, and/or repositioning the disc in the joint hinge.
